Product Description For the first time, Dan Rooney, chairman of one of the greatest NFL dynasties ever, the Pittsburgh Steelers--winner of five Super Bowls--tells his compelling life story. In 2007, the Pittsburgh Steelers will turn seventy-five years old. So will Dan Rooney. In Dan Rooney, the owner talks about growing up on Pittsburgh's North Side, competing with Johnny Unitas for top high school quarterback honors in western Pennsylvania, learning the ropes of big-time sports from his father and mentor, Art Rooney ("the Chief"), helping to shape the modern NFL into America's all-consuming passion, and forging the Steelers into a Super Bowl-winning dynasty. He also speaks frankly about winning and losing, and discusses his relationships with family, coaches, players, owners, NFL commissioners, the media, and the fans--"Steeler Nation." It's all here: the difficult contract negotiations, controversial decisions, memorable teams, and many behind-the-scenes stories of the growth of America's favorite game. A dedicated family man and proud native of Pittsburgh, this chairman of one of the most successful franchises ever reveals the dynamics that have made him such a respected owner in the NFL.

Lots of inside information on the early years of the NFL February 18, 2010 Ronald J. Santos Overall, a very good book for anyone interested in the early years of the NFL and how the NFL is run from an owners perspective. If you are a fan of the Steelers and/or the city of Pittsburgh, I would highly recommend this book.
The author gives insights and tells stories about the formative years of the NFL,with firsthand knowledge about the formation of the players union, the first television contracts etc.
Mr Rooney also gives a season by season recounting of the Steelers seasons with inside information on what the management was thinking as the events unfolded.
I read the whole book in the course of 3-4 days and I found it very informative and entertaining.
Great read August 17, 2009 Peter (Melbourne Australia) Dan Rooney's autobiography is a good read filled with a wealth of information on the history of the NFL and the Steelers. He gives a solid account of his childhood and how he got to love football.
It is interesting to read his thoughts on some of the players over the years and how much winning the first Superbowl meant not only to the Steelers and himself but to the city of Pittsburgh who had been starved of a winning football team for too many years.
I wouldn't have minded a bit more information about his father Art Rooney as he appears to have been quite a character. Maybe there is room for a biography of him in the future?
Rooney was a first-hand witness of the NFL from being a small boy taken with his father to the games to being a man who saw the sport grow and grow to where we are today.
Great read.
Great book, great value, could have been shipped BETTER! May 21, 2009 Delta Lady (New England, USA) This is a mixed review: the book is great, the shipping (packing) was questionable!
I had looked at this book before on the NFL-Steeler site and they wanted $20-25 for it there at the time. I was looking for gifts for a "Steeler Maniac" relative who does not live near Pittsburgh anymore. Anything "Steeler" is always greatly loved and appreciated by her.
She loves this book however there was a delay in giving it to her as Amazon shipped this with several other "non-book" heavier items and the cover on this book was BENT when I received it! Through no doing of Amazon's packers, the cover did manage to survive "cracking" under the weight, so I had to turn it over on its front for a few days with a good bit of weight on top of it to get it right again.
But if you are looking for a gift for a "Steeler Maniac," this is a great buy on Amazon, even with the cover bent. I would just advise ordering it with other books and not any heavy "non-book" items as it was just thrown in the bottom of a box. We've ordered all books in a shipment from Amazon before and never had a problem (to be fair) so it was just "one of those things" although I feel they should have placed something (a piece of flat cardboard) between the books and the other "non-book" items I bought to protect the books in the shipment.
My review would have been 5 stars if it wasn't for this "packing" issue.
Dan Rooney: my 75 yrs with the Pitsburg Steelers & NFL January 25, 2009 Alice Gess (Holyoke, MA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this for my son-in-law as a Christmas present. He started reading it and could not put it down. He kept telling my daughter about little passages in the book. Some of which brought tears to his eyes. He called me, all the way from Qatar, to tell me Thank you for the book. It was the best present ever that he could of received. They are both stationed in Qatar with the Air Force and now my daughter is reading it and she is not even a football fan. They said it makes them feel almost like they are at home.

Hail to the Chief! January 19, 2009 Mahlon Christensen (Monterey, CA United States) Dan Rooney's Autobiography offers the reader an insider's view of the formation of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the growth of the NFL through the eyes of the man who's played a key role in every NFL decision for the past half-century. Although this book is not very well written it does contain many bits of inside information that I hadn't seen in other books.
